To help create a seamless process, and achieve the best results, here are 5 essential things to prepare before working with a web designer. It’ll save you a lot of time and help you so you (hopefully) won’t feel so overwhelmed during the design process.

1. Define your goals and objectives

Establish your key performance indicators (KPIs). Essentially, what goals do you want to achieve with your website? Outline the purpose of your website, the target audience, and the specific goals you want to achieve. These goals should align with your health coaching business goals. For example:

  • Do you want your ideal clients to book more free discovery calls for your 1-on-1 health coaching program?
  • Do you want more lead magnet signups to grow your email list and build greater trust with your audience?
  • Maybe you want your dream clients to register for your monthly wellness membership.
  • Or maybe you want to build and grow a blog to share your expertise and knowledge with your audience, and you want to generate organic traffic with your blog post keywords (aka search engine optimization or SEO).

Whatever your website or business goals are, pick 1-2 top goals and determine how you will measure the success of your website. Will it be based on tracking website traffic or conversion rates? I recommend reviewing your metrics every month because this will help you assess the effectiveness of the design and make informed decisions about any improvements you may need. A few questions you could ask yourself are:

  • How well are the goals I’ve chosen performing?
  • What isn’t going well and why?
  • Is there anything that can be refined or improved?
  • Have I achieved the goal I set out to accomplish? How was this measured?

I recommend using a tool to keep track of your goal performance, such as Excel, or whichever tool suits you best. Make sure to share these goals with your web designer so they can properly incorporate your goals into the design.

2. Set a budget and timeline

Establish a budget and timeline for your project, and communicate these with your website designer to ensure everyone is on the same page. The web designer might already have their prices listed on their website for you to see (which is great!). When you communicate with the designer, you can share your desired website launch date.

Depending on how booked and busy the designer is, they may or may not be able to launch your website on the date you desire. Because of this, I recommend contacting a web designer months in advance to see, with their schedule, if they can launch your website on the date you want.

3. Research and gather inspiration

Explore other websites to get ideas for design, layout, and functionality. I recommend viewing websites that are not in your industry to inspire new ideas and possibilities. Are there any animations or specific design elements that catch your eye? Maybe it’s the website copy that makes you want to keep scrolling the website.

You can also view Pinterest for inspiration as well. Share what you find with your designer to help communicate your website vision. Remember: never ever copy. This should only be for inspiration

4. Define your brand identity

If the website designer you’ve chosen doesn’t offer brand design, make sure to have your branding together. You can DIY your branding or hire a brand designer. Your branding can include a mood board with visuals, a color palette, typography, and a logo. You can create a Pinterest mood board to organize your brand ideas into one place. I highly recommend hiring a copywriter for your website or doing research online on how to write effective website copy.

With your amazing copywriting, you want to immediately grab your ideal clients’ attention when they land on your website and inspire them to scroll your website and see who you are, what you do, and all the amazing things you have to offer! Provide your web designer with information about your brand to help maintain consistency across your website and other branding elements.

5. Gather testimonials and client reviews

Social proof is such a powerful thing because it encourages website visitors to take action on your website. Whether that’s booking a free discovery call or signing up for your email list, because of the positive feedback from past clients (which builds trust and credibility).

I recommend sending an email to past clients asking for a written or video testimonial. You can create a survey of questions and send them the link or allow them to freewrite their review (without answering any questions from a testimonial survey). Either way, make sure to disclose that their testimonial will be added to your website.

Ultimately, by thoroughly preparing and communicating with your website designer, you’ll help set the stage for a successful collaboration and a website that meets your goals and expectations. You don’t have to do everything that was listed here, however, if you do prepare with 1 or 2 things from this list, (and you’ll be so glad you did!), it’ll be super helpful for you and your designer. I’m excited to see how your health coaching website turns out!

Building your health coaching website can be overwhelming and super time-consuming, but it doesn’t have to be! Launching your website gets to be easy. Leave the DIY website design overwhelm behind! Your dream wellness website is only one click away.
